Montholme Road, SW11, Between the commons

A full renovation and extension of a Victorian terraced house for a young family. The project reworks the entire plan, adding a ground floor extension, a full-length first floor addition and a loft conversion with a generous roof terrace. The house was taken back to its structure and rebuilt throughout.

To the rear, full-height glazing with slender vertical bars opens the kitchen and informal living space onto the garden. A horizontal band of black zinc runs above, with oversized seams lining through the glazing grid to create a tight, contemporary elevation. A large pivot door gives everyday access to the garden.

Internally, a rooflight spans the width of the extension. Exposed timber joists cross the opening to soften glare and cast shadows across the pared-back interiors, changing throughout the day. Victorian detailing was reinstated where it had been lost, sitting comfortably alongside new joinery including a bespoke study nook.

At loft level, a frameless picture window captures long views across Clapham and a new terrace provides an elevated outdoor space. Original fabric, new structure, glazing and zinc are handled as a single, coherent language.

From a construction perspective the house required extensive refurbishment: new services, full insulation upgrades, steelwork, roof build-ups and bespoke joinery packages, all delivered while maintaining the precision of the architectural detailing.
